HGH Dosage Guide, Benefits & Side Effects
FDA-approved for GH deficiency and wasting syndromes, HGH raises IGF-1 to support muscle growth, fat loss, and tissue repair. See dosing research.

HGH (somatropin) is a lab-made version of the hormone your pituitary gland naturally makes. It's FDA-approved for growth hormone deficiency, and also researched off-label for muscle growth, fat loss, recovery, and anti-aging effects like skin and sleep quality.

What is HGH?
HGH (Human Growth Hormone) is the natural hormone your pituitary gland produces to drive growth, muscle building, fat burning, and tissue repair throughout your body. A lab-made version is FDA-approved for treating growth hormone deficiency and certain wasting conditions, and it's also widely used off-label for anti-aging, muscle gain, and performance purposes. It works largely by triggering the release of another hormone (IGF-1) that carries out many of its effects.

How Does HGH Work?
It attaches to growth hormone receptors on cells throughout the body, kicking off a signaling chain that tells the liver to produce another hormone, IGF-1, which carries out many of growth hormone's effects. Directly, it also helps break down fat and build protein in tissues.
Binds GH receptors
Attaches to growth hormone receptors on cells throughout the body.
Triggers IGF-1
Tells the liver to produce IGF-1, which carries out many of its effects.
Direct & indirect effects
Directly breaks down fat and builds protein; indirectly drives growth via IGF-1.

How to reconstitute HGH
View guideThe materials you'll need and step-by-step instructions for safely mixing HGH with bacteriostatic water.
Materials needed
Your HGH vial (lyophilized)
Alcohol swabs
Bacteriostatic sterile water
3 mL syringes (Luer Lock tip)
25G or 27G needles (Luer Lock). Other gauges may also be acceptable.
Sharps container (optional)
Remove the caps
Sanitize the rubber stoppers
Attach the needle
Draw the bac water
Pull back on the plunger to draw your desired volume of bacteriostatic water. If you overfill, just push the excess back in until you reach the right marker on the syringe.
Insert the needle into the HGH vial
With the bac water in your syringe, insert the needle into the HGH vial at a slight angle to avoid pressure buildup.
Release the water gently
Let the water run gently down the side of the vial. Don't inject it forcefully.
Swirl to dissolve
Avoid shaking. Gently swirl, flip, and roll the vial to dissolve the powder.
Check for full dissolution
Cap, dispose, and store
How to Store HGH
Keep the dry powder in the fridge, away from light, and never freeze it. Once mixed with liquid, refrigerate and use within about a month, and don't shake it.
Lyophilized Storage
2–8°C, protect from light; do not freeze.
Reconstituted Storage
2–8°C for up to 28 days.
Handling Notes
Do not shake the vial.

What Are the Benefits of HGH?
What research says it may help with, and how it works in the body.
growth hormone deficiency
Approved by the FDA to treat growth hormone deficiency that starts in childhood or adulthood, whether it's caused by a pituitary tumor, surgery, radiation treatment, or an injury.
Approved by the FDA to help increase muscle mass and body weight in people with cachexia, a severe wasting condition often linked to serious illness.
Approved by the FDA to treat short stature and growth problems from various causes, including unexplained cases as well as specific genetic conditions like Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Noonan syndrome, and SHOX gene deficiency, and being born small for gestational age.
body composition
Leads to noticeable fat loss over one to three months, especially belly fat and the fat surrounding internal organs.
Increases muscle mass and improves the overall ratio of muscle to fat in the body.
Helps the body recover faster from exercise and heal tissue more effectively.
antiaging
Improves skin's firmness and texture, and supports healthier hair and nail growth.
Improves energy levels, sleep quality, and overall quality of life.
What Are the Side Effects of HGH?
Who should avoid it, warning signs to watch for, and what to know before combining it with other compounds.
Who Should Avoid It
Active cancer (may accelerate tumor growth)
Acute critical illness (increased mortality in ICU patients)
Closed epiphyses in children (for growth promotion)
Pregnancy/breastfeeding
Stop Right Away If You Notice
Severe or worsening carpal tunnel symptoms
Signs of diabetes (increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision)
Severe edema (facial, hand, or feet swelling)
Severe joint/muscle pain unresponsive to dose reduction
New lumps, masses, or rapidly growing moles
Severe headaches or vision changes
Signs of allergic reaction
Gynecomastia (breast tissue growth in males)
Hypothyroid symptoms (fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance)
Milder Signs to Watch For
How Long Should a HGH Cycle Last?
This breaks down how long a typical HGH cycle runs and what research suggests happens at each stage. Research shows that staying on a peptide continuously, without a break, may make it less effective over time.
That's why most research protocols build in a break between cycles, often called a washout period, to let the body reset before starting again.
- Week 1-2
- Improved sleep quality, increased energy, possible water retention and joint stiffness
- Week 2-4
- Enhanced exercise recovery, skin improvement, possible carpal tunnel symptoms
- Month 1-2
- Noticeable fat loss (especially abdominal), improved skin elasticity and texture
- Month 2-3
- Continued fat loss, lean mass improvements, hair/nail growth, reduced recovery time
- Month 3-6
- Significant body composition changes, improved bone density, sustained energy/well-being
- Week 0-0
- Maintained benefits; effects diminish weeks-months after discontinuation
